Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. These muscular tumors, which are often referred to as leiomyomas or myomas, can vary in size and quantity and can cause symptoms such as pelvic pain and excessive menstrual bleeding, and pressure on the bladder or rectum. Many women with fibroids may not show any symptoms at all, but depending on how severe their illness is, some may need to have surgery.
Menstrual changes: extended periods, irregular menstrual cycles and heavy menstrual bleeding.
Pelvic pain and pressure: Pain or discomfort in the pelvic region, frequently accompanied by a pressured or full sensation.
Repeated urination: The bladder will become pressurized by fibroids.
Difficulties emptying the bladder: Big fibroids can impede the bladder, making full emptying difficult
Difficulty passing stool or constipation: Fibroids pressing against the rectum might result in constipation or painful passing of stool.
Leg or back pain: In rare cases, fibroids may push on back nerves, resulting in leg or back pain
Hereditary Propensity: There is data that suggests the risk of acquiring fibroids is increased in families with a history of the condition. You might be more vulnerable if your sibling or mother has fibroids.
Hormones: The menstrual cycle-regulating hormones progesterone and oestrogen appear to encourage the formation of fibroids.
Age: Women who are in their reproductive years are most likely to get fibroids. Also women after menopause are likely to get fibroids when estrogenic and progesterone levels drop.
Obesity: Some research indicates that having a high body mass index or being obese raises the risk of fibroids
Diet: A diet heavy in red meat and poor in fruits, vegetables, and dairy products may put a person at risk for fibroids.
childbirth: There may be a larger chance of fibroids forming in women who have never given birth
A laparoscopic myomectomy is a surgical operation that uses a laparoscope—a thin, illuminated tube with a camera—to remove uterine fibroids through tiny abdominal incisions. Compared to open surgery, this minimally invasive method has a number of benefits, such as quicker recovery time, less discomfort and less scarring
It could be necessary to make more tiny incisions in order to implant specialty surgical devices. These instruments are used to manipulate the uterus and remove the fibroids.
The uterus’ integrity is preserved for ladies who hope to become pregnant in the future. in such cases the surgeon delicately removes the fibroids from the organ.
The incisions are stitched or sutured shut after the fibroids are removed. Surgical glue or absorbable sutures may be utilized in certain situations.
Worsening Symptoms: Pelvic pain, pressure and excessive monthly bleeding are some of the symptoms associated with uterine fibroids. If treatment is not received, these symptoms could get worse over time and interfere with everyday tasks and general wellbeing
Fertility Impact: Certain types and locations of fibroids can affect a woman’s ability to become pregnant. Early treatment can help protect fertility by treating fibroids that may impair the uterine cavity or interfere with the reproductive organs’ normal function, especially for people who are expecting a pregnancy.
Difficulties Throughout Pregnancy: Preterm delivery, breech births, and the requirement for a caesarean section are just a few of the pregnancy issues that can arise from having fibroids. Preventing pregnancy-related fibroids can lower these chances.
Anaemia: Over time, iron-deficiency due to anaemia may result from heavy menstrual bleeding linked to fibroids. Fatigue, weakness, and other health problems can be brought on by such anaemia
Quality of Life: A woman’s physical, mental, and social well-being can all be adversely affected by uterine fibroids
Size and Growth: Fibroids come in a range of sizes and might get bigger over time. Bigger fibroids may be harder to treat and produce more severe symptoms. By acting early, fibroids can be prevented from growing to a size that makes treatment choices more difficult
Avoiding Emergency Situations: In rare cases, fibroids can lead to complications such as twisting of the fibroid or degeneration, which can cause severe pain and may require emergency medical attention.
Inpatient Stay: After a laparoscopic myomectomy, majority of women are able to return home the same day or the next day. They could be advised in some circumstances to stay overnight for monitoring.
Control of Pain: You can feel some pain or discomfort in the pelvic region and the vicinity of the incisions. To treat any discomfort following surgery, your doctor will either offer over-the-counter pain medicines or write a prescription for painkillers.
Recovery and Rest at Home: It’s critical to adhere to the at-home care recommendations provided by your healthcare professional. Generally speaking, the first few days of recovery should be spent sleeping and avoiding physically demanding activities.
Gradual Resumption of Activity: To prevent blood clots and improve healing, it is recommended to gradually increase mild activities such as walking after resting for a period of time. It’s normally advised to refrain from hard lifting and intense exercise for a few weeks
Return to Work: There is no set schedule for going back to work. While some women with more physically demanding occupations might require longer time off, others might feel ready to go back to a desk job in as little as one week.

In a laparoscopic myomectomy, small incisions are made, and a laparoscope is used to guide the removal of fibroids. This approach typically results in a faster recovery with less scarring compared to an open myomectomy, which involves a larger abdominal incision.
The impact on fertility depends on factors such as the location and size of the fibroids. Myomectomy is generally considered a fertility-preserving procedure, and many women experience improved fertility after the removal of problematic fibroids
While myomectomy removes existing fibroids, it does not guarantee that new ones won't develop. The recurrence of fibroids is possible, and this can vary among individuals.
In most cases, yes. Myomectomy typically preserves the uterus, allowing for normal menstrual cycles. However, the procedure may improve menstrual symptoms associated with fibroids.
Yes, many women who undergo myomectomy are able to conceive and have successful pregnancies. The impact on fertility depends on factors such as the type, size, and location of the fibroids
