What is Nephrectomy?

Nephrectomy is a surgical procedure to remove one or both kidneys of the human body. It is done to treat severe kidney diseasesor for kidney donation. There are two main types of Nephrectomies. They are Partial Nephrectomy (removing a part of the kidney) and Radical Nephrectomy (removing the entire kidney). It is a surgical extraction of the kidneys.

Symptoms that you need a Nephrectomy

Symptoms of nephrectomy generally include pain, swelling and discomfort at the surgical area. Patients will also experience fatigue, urinary changes and some complications such as infection/bleeding.

Complications of Nephrectomy

Complications of nephrectomy will include infection, bleeding, injury to nearby organs, pain, urinary issues and in rare cases: long-term kidney problems.

What is the need for Nephrectomy

Nephrectomy can be necessary in some cases of severe kidney diseases, such as kidney cancer, kidney stones and chronic kidney infections

In living kidney donation, a healthy kidney is removed from a donor to provide a functional kidney for a recipient with possible kidney failure.

Nephrectomy will be required when cysts in the kidney that are associated with polycystic kidney disease become too large

In rare cases, nephrectomy will be needed to manage traumatic injuries that have happened to the kidneys that cannot be repaired

Individuals with a high risk of kidney cancer will undergo prophylactic nephrectomy to reduce the risk of cancer development

For patients with end-stage kidney disease who are not candidates for kidney transplantation

Partial Nephrectomy

The primary goal of a partial nephrectomy is to preserve as much of healthy kidney tissue as possible, while removing the diseased or damaged portion of the kidney

It is used to treat localized kidney tumours. when the tumour is small or when patient has only one functional kidney.

Partial nephrectomy is commonly performed for kidney cancer and is the alternative to radical nephrectomy.

Partial nephrectomy leaves more kidney tissue intact. Thus, there is a lower risk of kidney dysfunction or chronic kidney disease compared to radical nephrectomy.

Partial nephrectomy can be performed using minimally invasivetechniques.Laparoscopy or robotic-assisted surgery, which involves smaller incisions and even shorter recovery times

It minimizes the risk of postoperative complications like chronic kidney disease, hypertension and electrolyte imbalances.

It is a suitable choice for patients with challenging cases, such as patients with multiple tumours in the kidney and those with only one functional kidney.

Patients who undergo partial nephrectomy may still require long-term surveillance to monitor for tumour recurrence or complications.

The choice between partial and radical depend on factors like, tumour size, location and the patient’s overall health.

Radical Nephrectomy

Radical nephrectomy is the removal of the entire affected kidney with the surrounding fatty tissue.

It is commonly used for the treatment of kidney cancer particularly when the cancer is large, aggressive and has spread to nearby area

Radical nephrectomy is a very effective approach towards managing advanced kidney cancer and preventing cancer spread.

After removing the entire kidney,Radical Nephrectomy minimizes the risk of cancer recurrence in the affected kidney.

Radical nephrectomy can be performed through open surgery or minimally invasive procedures like laparoscopy or robotic-assisted surgery.

Adjusting to life after Nephrectomy

Recovery Period: The immediate post-operative recovery period can vary depending on the type of nephrectomy and individual factors. Patients will require to stay for 3-7 days post-surgery

Pain and discomfort are common after nephrectomy surgery but medication and correct care can help manage these symptoms.

A balanced diet and proper hydration are important for overall health and kidney function.

Regular follow-up appointments are crucial to monitor the healing, kidney function and to check for recurrence.

If one kidney remains, it typically adapts to compensate for the loss. it’s important to monitor kidney function and maintain a healthy lifestyle to support your remaining kidney.

Nephrectomy may have long-term implications for kidney function and overall health, so regular check-ups and a healthy lifestyle are essential.

Coping with the physical and emotional aspects of nephrectomy may be challenging, always Seek support from healthcare providers, support groupsand  mental health professionals if needed.

Depending on the underlying condition for which nephrectomy was performed, lifestyle changes will be necessary.

Understand and watch for potential complications like high blood pressure, kidney disease, or cancer recurrence, depending on the specific case.

staying well-hydrated, avoiding excessive alcohol and using medications only as prescribed.
