Indications: Patients experiencing excruciating spinal compression fractures due to osteoporosis, trauma, tumours, or other causes are typically advised to undergo vertebroplasty. Back discomfort that is severe and chronic might result from these fractures.
Procedure: The patient is usually placed face down on an X-ray table for a vertebroplasty. Anaesthesia is localized during the procedure. Under the supervision of fluoroscopy, a tiny needle is introduced through the skin and muscle into the broken vertebra (real-time X-ray imaging).
Injection of Bone Cement: Following proper needle placement within the broken vertebra, the vertebral body is injected with a specific medical-grade bone cement, commonly polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). Rapid hardening of the cement stabilizes the damaged vertebra and offers structural stability.
Pain Relief and Stability: By stabilizing the broken vertebra, stopping additional collapse, and relieving pressure on the surrounding nerves, the injected cement helps to relieve pain. Pain alleviation is sometimes felt nearly immediately;however, it may take a little while for the cement to set completely.
Recovering: Most patients can go home the same day after a vertebroplasty, which is normally an outpatient treatment. In order to give the cement time to fully solidify, patients are typically instructed to restrict their physical activity for a brief duration.
